Choosing the Best Artificial Turf for Denver Homes
By Elite Turf Refresh Team

If you are shopping for artificial turf for your Denver-area home — or replacing an aging installation — the options can feel overwhelming. Dozens of brands, multiple fiber types, various infill systems, and a wide price range. Here is what actually matters for long-term performance along Colorado's Front Range, based on what we see in the field servicing hundreds of turf installations across the Denver metro communities.
UV Stabilization Is Non-Negotiable in Colorado
At 5,280 feet, your turf absorbs roughly 25% more ultraviolet radiation than identical turf at sea level. Any turf you consider must have UV-stabilized fibers specifically rated for intense, prolonged sun exposure. Ask your supplier about the UV stabilizer compound and its tested performance at altitude — not all stabilization methods degrade at the same rate under high-UV conditions. Turf that performs beautifully in Seattle may fade noticeably in Denver within a few years.
Fiber Material: Polyethylene, Nylon, or Polypropylene
Polyethylene is the most common residential turf fiber and delivers the best balance of softness, durability, and cost for Colorado conditions. It handles UV reasonably well and feels natural underfoot.
Nylon is stronger, more resilient, and holds its shape better under heavy use and heat. It is the preferred material for putting greens and sport surfaces where performance consistency matters. Nylon costs more but justifies the premium for activity-specific installations.
Polypropylene is the least durable option and the most vulnerable to UV degradation. We generally recommend against polypropylene for Colorado installations, especially in unshaded areas. The cost savings at purchase rarely justify the shortened lifespan at altitude.
Infill System: The Hidden Performance Factor
The infill system matters as much as the turf fiber itself — possibly more for long-term satisfaction. For Colorado, you need infill that drains well, resists excessive compaction in dry conditions, and does not break down under UV exposure. Common options include:
- Silica sand: Affordable, drains well, but can compact in Colorado's dry climate
- Coated sand (Durafill): Better compaction resistance, good drainage
- Organic infill (cork, coconut): Eco-friendly but may decompose faster at altitude UV levels
- Rubber crumb: Good cushioning for play areas, but can heat up significantly in Colorado sun
Discuss infill options specifically in the context of Colorado performance. What works in a humid, moderate climate may not perform the same here.
Drainage Rate: Plan for Colorado Thunderstorms
Colorado's intense afternoon thunderstorms can dump an inch or more of rain in 30 minutes. Your turf should drain at least 30 inches per hour — and higher is better for our climate where heavy rain followed by immediate sunshine is the norm. Poor drainage leads to standing water, which accelerates infill compaction and creates conditions for mold and bacteria. Ask about drainage rate specifically and verify it accounts for the entire system, not just the turf backing.
Pile Height and Density: Match to Your Use Case
For landscape turf, pile heights between 1.5 and 2 inches with dense fiber count provide the most natural appearance. Taller pile looks lush but requires more maintenance to keep fibers upright. For putting greens, shorter pile heights (typically 0.5 to 0.75 inches) with very high density deliver the truest ball roll and most consistent playing surface.
Installation Quality Matters More Than Brand
The best turf product in the world will underperform with poor installation. Proper base preparation, compaction, grading for drainage, seamwork, and edge securing are critical — especially in Colorado where thermal expansion, freeze-thaw cycles, and wind stress every joint and edge. Ask potential installers specifically about their experience with Colorado conditions, not just total installations.
Maintenance Keeps Any Turf Performing
Regardless of which turf you choose, professional maintenance extends its life and performance. We service all brands, fiber types, and infill systems. Choose the turf that best fits your needs and budget, then protect that investment with regular professional care. Well-maintained mid-range turf consistently outperforms neglected premium turf.
