Winter Artificial Turf Care in Colorado: Do's and Don'ts
By Elite Turf Refresh Team

Colorado winters are actually gentler on artificial turf than you might expect. The combination of frequent sunny days, dry air, and moderate cold — mixed with occasional warm chinook winds — means artificial turf handles winter here better than in consistently cold, wet climates like the Midwest or Northeast. Still, a few smart habits and a clear list of things to avoid will keep your turf in excellent condition through the cold months.
The Good News About Colorado Winters and Turf
Artificial turf does not go dormant, die, or turn brown like natural grass. On Colorado's famously sunny winter days — and there are a lot of them — your turf looks as green and vibrant as it does in summer. Snow generally does not damage well-maintained turf, and the state's dry air means moisture-related issues are less common than in humid winter climates.
Colorado's 300 days of sunshine work in your favor. Even mid-winter, south-facing turf installations get substantial sun exposure that melts snow, dries surfaces, and keeps fibers from staying frozen for extended periods.
Do: Let Snow Melt Naturally
When possible, let snow melt on its own. Colorado's sunshine and dry air clear most snow accumulations within a day or two. The water drains through naturally and the turf dries quickly. This is the safest and most effective approach for your turf — no risk of damage from removal efforts.
Do: Use Warm Days for Quick Maintenance
Take advantage of Colorado's frequent warm winter days — those 50 to 60 degree afternoons in January and February — to sweep debris off your turf. A quick 15-minute sweep on a mild afternoon keeps leaves, twigs, and grit from accumulating all winter. These warm windows are also excellent for a quick hose rinse of pet areas.
Do: Inspect After Major Storms
After significant snow or ice events, check your turf once the melt is complete. Look for ice dams along edges, pooling water that indicates drainage problems, shifted edges, or any seam separations that winter contraction may have caused. Catching issues early prevents them from compounding through the rest of winter.
Do: Keep an Eye on Pet Areas
Pet waste still happens in winter, and cold weather slows bacterial breakdown — which means buildup is accumulating even if you do not smell it yet. Continue daily waste pickup and periodic rinsing on warm days. This prevents the unpleasant odor surge that catches many pet owners off guard when spring arrives. Our disinfect and deodorize service is available year-round when weather permits.
Don't: Use Salt or Chemical De-Icers
Salt and chemical de-icing products can damage turf fibers, contaminate infill, and compromise drainage. If ice forms on a walkway that crosses your turf, use sand for traction instead — it is fiber-safe and will integrate harmlessly into your infill when it melts through.
Don't: Use Metal Shovels or Snow Blowers
If you must physically remove snow from your turf, use only plastic shovels. Metal shovel edges can catch and tear turf fibers, rip seams, and gouge the surface. Snow blowers with metal contact edges pose the same risks. A plastic shovel at a slight angle above the surface is the safest manual approach.
Don't: Walk on Heavily Frozen Turf
Turf fibers become significantly less flexible when frozen and can snap rather than bend under foot traffic. On mornings when the surface is visibly frosted or icy, wait for the sun to warm it — usually by mid-morning on a sunny Colorado day — before allowing heavy foot traffic. This is especially important for putting greens where fiber condition directly affects performance.
Don't: Ignore Winter Entirely
The biggest winter mistake is assuming turf needs zero attention until spring. Minor issues — a slowly separating seam, gradually accumulating debris, pet waste buildup, compacting infill — compound over four or five months of neglect. Periodic attention on warm days prevents small problems from becoming expensive spring repairs.
